In the midst of a housing crisis George Osborne’s Summer Budget brought a seemingly small announcement with large consequences for homeowners and renters alike. The Chancellor announced that from April 2016 the Government will increase the tax-free amount home owners can earn by renting out a room from the current rate of £4,250 to £7,500. This is exactly what SpareRoom's Raise the Roof campaign has been calling for for the last six years. As you can imagine, we were delighted to get a call from the Chancellor’s office to tell us the change was going into the Budget.

With a predicted one in five or more people expected to rent in the future, just building new properties for sale via Help to Buy or 20% discounted homes for first time buyers, isn’t going to help us out of the current hole we have in our stock levels. Don't take your electrics for granted!

The safety of people and property is being put at risk because 18 million of us feel too embarrassed to ask if an electrician is registered, according to research by Electrical Safety First. The Charity recently launched a major consumer campaign to raise awareness of the need to use a registered electrician. It follows an investigation which discovered that asking an electrician for proof of their professional registration was one of the top three most awkward questions – after asking your boss for a pay rise and requesting a queue jumper to get to the back of the line.
