Tommy Walsh puts an end to cowboy builders!

A new service from Tommy Walsh and Harvey Ellingham, who has worked in the building industry for over 20 years, protects home improvers – and good builders - payments via a new service called
“The Home Improvements Guarantee”.

The scheme works by the homeowner paying the money for works, or stage payments, into their own independent client account – regulated by HMRC and the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority). This allows the builder to see the money is there, so they can secure credit for materials, but they are only paid when the homeowner is happy the work has been done to their satisfaction. Any disputes are settled using an Independent Chartered Surveyor.

Tommy comments “It’s always been a passion of mine to get rid of the cowboys who give the building trade a bad name. Not only do we protect people’s money, we provide them with some of the best builders in the land to do the work they need.”

Kate Faulkner MD of Propertychecklists.co.uk is delighted this service is being offered to consumers. “Like Tommy and Harvey we are passionate about home improvers getting the very best service and reducing the stress of works to their homes. This is just the kind of company we like to work with to give great advice and a great service to ensure home improvers carry out their property project successfully the first time.”

Home Improvements Guarantee sponsor the “How to choose a builder” checklist on Kate’s www.propertychecklists.co.uk  which provides over 60 free checklists to help people carry out property projects right for the first time.

Harvey says “Propertychecklists.co.uk is a great site for anyone moving, improving or investing in a home. It gives good, independent and honest advice and we are thrilled to be able to support Kate and her team’s mission of educating people on the right steps to take to employ a builder.”

Here's their top three steps to carry out before you choose a builder:-

  1. Make sure you write down all the work you want doing in the property, however small.
  2. Include jobs you want doing now and ones for the future too – so the builder can carry out work now with one eye on future works which can help keep costs of further work down.
  3. Check the impact of the works you are doing on the value of your property. Spending £30,000 on a loft conversion may not instantly increase your property’s value by the same amount.
