Check what cover you require e.g. contents if you are a tenant or own a flat with a lease, contents and building insurance for homeowners.  
Check each room to work out how much it would cost to replace as new the contents at your home if your property burned down or was flooded.   
If you have to make an insurance claim check excess you have to pay? For example £100, £150 or £250.   
Do you have any one off items such as jewellery which are worth more than £2,000?  
Have you any personal possessions you need to insure away from the home?  
Does this insurance cover you just in the UK, Europe or worldwide?  
Have you a bike which is worth than £500 which needs covering?  
Do you want to insure damage caused at home by accidents? What additional charges will you incur?  
Would you like family legal protection in case of issues from hiring goods or services or a breach in your employment contract?  
Check what ISN’T insured with your policy, a good insurance company will make this clear.  
How long can you leave the property unoccupied before restrictions apply?
